Burnett Shire and The Coral Coast

From the coast to the country, the Coral Coast features a diverse range of attractions. Surrounding Bundaberg and extending from Baffle Creek in the north to Theodolite Creek in the south, the Coral Coast encompasses 92 kilometres of Pacific Ocean coastline of sandy beaches, rocky volcanic flows and outcrops and fringing coral reefs. Sugar is the largest crop and a green blanket of cane fields, smallcrop farms and orchards extends almost to the horizon, when viewed from atop the Hummock Lookout, just west of Bargara. With the Coral Coast extending to within 10 kilometres of Gin Gin to the west and 20 kilometres from Childers to the south - there's a lot to see and do! Three golf clubs, a sailing club and two marinas, rowing, scuba diving and boat and fishing charters are just some of the many activities you’ll find within the Coral Coast.

The Coral Coast's beaches and coastal holiday villages are popular with families and those looking for affordable holidays. Swim, snorkel, fish, sail or enjoy land-based activities like beach 4WDriving, shoreline walks or simply sitting under a palm tree and relaxing. Bargara is the main coastal township with an attractive streetscape design and features services and eating options at a range of locations. Other beaches and coastal villages in the area south of the Burnett River include Burnett Heads and The Oaks, Coonarr, Coral Cove, Elliott Heads, Innes Park and Riverview. The Port Marina is the destination of choice for yachties from all over the world and large shipping lines alike, and turtle watching at Mon Repos is a fascinating attraction during our summer months from November until the end of March.

Moore Park, Miara and Norval Park to the north of the Burnett River offer long, secluded beaches and great 4WDriving opportunities - the epitome of a Queensland beach holiday! Moore Park Beach also offers coastal accommodation options - from camping and cabins, to motel rooms and apartments plus casual cafes and eateries and great wildlife viewing opportunities. Kangaroos often frequent the lawns and roadsides in the Sylvan Sands precinct.

Away from the coast, many areas offer the visitor relaxing rural scenery, enjoyable self-drive tours and some unique attractions. The Mystery Craters at South Kolan are an unusual geological formation of moon-like craters formed in solid rock. Scenic picnic areas can be found at Cedar's Crossing on the Burnett River and at Smiths & Bucca Crossing on the Kolan River, which also features a rowing venue upstream at Kinagin, - all with the added bonus of offering a summertime swim! Environmental walks for viewing the area's native wildlife can be enjoyed at both Sharon & Meadowvale Nature Parks and at Avondale, a uniquely historical site.

Accommodation options in the shire range from basic environmental park camping, caravan/camping parks, pub style hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, apartments and attractive resorts.

Why not plan your visit to coincide with one of our major events, like the summertime turtle-nesting season or one of our many surf and sports carnivals?
